Although I did not understand the teachings of Christian Science...
Although I did not understand the teachings of Christian Science when I first heard of it, I never for a moment doubted that it was true. I had been a sufferer from chronic bowel trouble and other ills for twenty-five years, using material remedies continually. At times I would be relieved, but only to have the ailments return. A cousin came to our home for a few days' visit, and as I felt very miserable he asked me one day why I did not try Christian Science, saying that he had been healed by it of a similar difficulty. He talked to me a while about the subject, and on his return home sent me some literature, which I read and reread.
My thoughts were thus turned into new channels, for I saw that if Christian Science had healed others it could heal me, and as I had read that testimonies of healing were given at the Wednesday evening meetings, I went to my cousin's home and attended one with him. I was surprised to see so many intelligent looking people, who all seemed friendly and happy, and I thought there surely must be something in this teaching, for these people could not all be wrong. During the service I listened as only one would who was very much interested. The reading, singing, and all seemed very beautiful to me, but it happened that only a few people testified, and I was not so impressed as I had expected to be.
When we reached home we talked about the meeting for a while, and then retired, but I kept thinking about what I had seen and heard, and could not sleep. Soon every trouble and pain I had ever experienced seemed to come back to me with renewed force, and I suffered terribly until morning, when a Christian Science practitioner was sent for. She arrived in about an hour, and I shall never forget her sweet face. She talked a few minutes and then gave me treatment. I was healed instantaneously of the chronic bowel disorder and other ills, and all others troubles seemed to vanish like mist before the morning sunlight. That afternoon I returned home much happier than I had ever dreamed it possible to be. Treatment was, however, continued for two weeks, as fear had a strong hold on me. All material remedies were discarded, and now for six years I have relied on God under all circumstances. The Bible and Science and Health have been my daily companions.
