In his endeavor in a recent sermon to harmonize the practice...

In his endeavor in a recent sermon to harmonize the practice of medicine with spiritual or divine healing, the Rev. Mr.—chooses to criticize Christian Science. Christian Science opposes such an amalgamation. It demonstrates the theology of Christ Jesus; for Jesus set forth the way of salvation as purely spiritual, and no element of materialism or activity of physical law entered into his demonstrations of scientific being. To suppose that omnipotent good, the first great intelligent cause which created the universe, needs the aid or assistance of a non-intelligent, inanimate drug or lotion to promote or continue the health and harmony of man created in His likeness, is to belittle Deity.

Omnipotence can never be less than omnipotent. This all-power is divine Mind, and cannot be confounded with the carnal mind, or so-called intelligent matter, which "is enmity against God." It was this Mind of Christ Jesus that gave him a scientific knowledge of Truth and enabled him to know the difference between the spiritual universe and a material world, between man created in God's image and a sinning mortal.

The spiritual understanding of scientific being which Christian Science gives, obliterates human belief, and gives mankind a true knowledge of God's law as operative to meet his human need. Christian Science demonstration is not a blind faith or the mere repetition of words, but the realization of the presence and power of God. The teachings of Christ Jesus set forth the unmistakable way of salvation, and proclaim this way to be entirely separate from all material methods of living; yet the Master and his disciples ate and drank the same as others. The partaking of food and drink are some of the things Jesus found it necessary to suffer "to be so now," while overcoming the things of the flesh. Therefore it is not inconsistent for Christian Scientists to live in houses, wear clothes, and eat and drink; in fact, if they seek "first the kingdom of God," they are justly entitled to all the comforts of human life.
