Unfailing Joy

In the presence of an international conflict which threatens to engulf the Christian world with a tidal wave of suffering and unhappiness, many may be led to doubt the possibility of being obedient to St. Paul's mandatory counsel to the Thessalonians, that they "rejoice evermore," or to conform to the kindred and oft-repeated injunctions to the early Christians at a time when they were "troubled on every side."

Though the seriousness of the tragedy of the apostle's own life-experiences is revealed in the eleventh chapter of his second letter to the Corinthians, the triumphant note which pervades all his writings makes it apparent that he had entered into the practical possession, the every-day use of that inheritance which Christ Jesus bestowed when he said, "Peace I leave with you," "that your joy may be full." He proved for himself, to paraphrase the poet, that at its worst
