[Written for the Sentinel]

Glad Assurance

I will be glad, I said; but in the round
Of daily trivial tasks and anxious thought—
Of days with care and bitterness full fraught—
Never my heart a cause for gladness found.

I will be strong, I said, and none shall seek
The kindly inspiration of my word
Without a message, inly felt or heard;
Yet when affliction found me I was weak.

Then came a voice that pierced the darkness through
Of self-bound consciousness, still, soft, and clear,—
By Love companioned, nothing need thou fear;
In Truth thy strength; in Truth thy gladness, too.

Welcome that message old to this new age,
Unfailing answer to the Spirit's call;
Though of mine own self nothing, yet the all
Of Truth is mine through blessed heritage.
