Although young in Christian Science, I desire to tell how...
Although young in Christian Science, I desire to tell how it has assisted me. I had always been a healthy woman, in fact I had never had an illness of any account, but during the summer of 1911 (we were then living in Reading, Pa.), I was not feeling well and was advised to consult a physician. This I did, but after taking medicine and being treated by the physician a number of times, everything seemed to be wrong with me, and I became a nervous wreck; so much so that I was unable to look out of the window at passers-by, could not read, or even be in a room with other people. I imagined all sorts of things, had crying spells, and would awake from sound sleep at night trembling from head to foot. A severe nervous shock seriously affected my heart, and I could not endure any loud talking, could not even read a letter when these nervous attacks came on; indeed, I thought the only thing left for me was to die.
I continued medical treatment for six months, taking a great deal of medicine, and with each dose I became worse. I was unable to eat or sleep, and was much reduced in weight. A friend advised me to try Christian Science, and my husband agreed at once to give it a trial. A practitioner was called, and through my study of the Bible, and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, also the faithful work of the practitioner, I gained a knowledge and understanding of Truth which overcame this nervous affliction. While under the physician's care it had seemed necessary, when these spells came on, to take medicine every fifteen minutes, and to use other material remedies, and it would be some time before I was relieved; but after my husband and I had studied Science and Health, we were able to apply our understanding of Truth and in a few minutes to overcome these attacks, which occurred at night, and at last they disappeared.
At the beginning of April, 1912, my husband was transferred from Reading to Tamaqua, and I thought I was in very poor condition to undertake moving, but the practitioner said there was nothing to fear, that God is with us at all times; and He certainly is, for we moved, and I can say, Surely God has been good to us. Four and a half months after taking up Science I could sleep all night, had a fine appetite, ate everything, enjoyed going outdoors, and could again enjoy conversation with my friends. I was doing almost all my own housework, gaining in weight, and every day showed how I was improving, and I can truthfully say that my healing has been permanent.
