True Vision

In Science and Health (p. 516) Mrs. Eddy says: "The substance, Life, intelligence, Truth, and Love, which constitute Deity, are reflected by His creation; and when we subordinate the false testimony of the corporeal senses to the facts of Science, we shall see this true likeness and reflection everywhere." This, then, is our only work in Christian Science, and it insures our progress and triumph.

A mechanic did some work in the home of a Christian Scientist lately, and part of it was poorly done. When he sent his bill, the Scientist wrote him that she would pay for the work that was well done, but as for the remainder she felt she should wait until it was made right. After some days the mechanic responded over the telephone in violent anger, saying that he wanted to be paid in full and at once. So excited was he that the Scientist could only answer, "Send your clerk around and I will pay what is right." The clerk presented himself, and our friend gave him a check for more than half the bill and asked the clerk to explain to the manager her willingness to pay the bill in full when the work was made satisfactory. In a few moments the clerk returned with the check, and then followed another attack over the telephone, with the threat that payment of the bill was to be enforced the next morning.

The Scientist then went to her lawyer, who said she was perfectly right in refusing to pay for work badly done, and told her to leave the matter in his hands. She left the lawyer's office with a great sense of relief that she need no longer dwell on the unpleasant affair, and then planned to go for a ride. She found, however, that she could not enjoy the air or the sunshine. She could not hear the birds sing, and the beauties of the changing landscape flitted by as a mere blank. Looking into her thought, she discovered that she was still in an argument with the mechanic. Then she said to herself, "Why not settle this whole thing in the light of Christian Science." She remembered Mrs. Eddy's teachings, and having declared the great truths of Science respecting God, and man in His image, she felt that she could go alone to the mechanic and settle the matter without a lawyer, so sure and safe did she feel in her estimate of him. In speaking of angels, Mrs. Eddy says, "We know their presence by the love they create in our hearts" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 306). Now she could hear the birds, the air and the sunshine came to her with a joyous touch, and all nature declared "the glory of God."
