"Omnipotent and omniscient Mind"

Mrs. Eddy, in referring to the healing work of Jesus' disciples after his ascension, writes on page 47 of Science and Health: "They no longer measured man by material sense. After gaining the true idea of their glorified Master, they became better healers, leaning no longer on matter, but on the divine Principle of their work;" and on page 25 of "Miscellaneous Writings" she writes, "Jesus' only medicine was omnipotent and omniscient Mind."

In these sayings Mrs. Eddy clearly indicates that in Christian Science practice "it is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing," even as the great Teacher had declared, and upon this same basis the work of healing as Christ Jesus healed the multitudes is to be done today. To measure "man by material sense" would be to give power to all unlike God, to all the theories and beliefs about disease, sin, and death; to regard man as a material being, sick and dying by reason of material conditions, and to be healed only by material remedies. To all of this Mrs. Eddy takes issue in Science and Health and her other writings, and plants Christian Science firmly upon the only enduring basis, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all" (Science and Health, p. 468).

The greatest trouble with the world today is its belief that material methods and means are necessary to keep men well or to heal them should they become ill, and this belief has been so carefully and industriously fostered that mankind is largely in bondage to it. In fact, no other belief is so firmly grounded in the human mind, and none other is so far-reaching in its effect as is this. To meet and overcome this belief is the first duty of each individual Christian Scientist, and it goes without saying that their first struggle must be in their own thought, otherwise "they be blind leaders of the blind." The result of such blind leadership has been declared by our Master, and its effects have been seen in every century; therefore the Christian Scientist who would profit by experience should bend much of his energy toward keeping his own thought clear and his own actions consistent in so important a matter.
