My comment has been requested upon the statement issued...

New Haven (Conn.) Union

My comment has been requested upon the statement issued by a well-known critic of Christian Science, and reported in the Union, concerning the decision of a New York court in the case of a Christian Science practitioner.

The critic's observation that the hostility of doctors and ministers toward the Christian Science religion would be removed by depriving its practitioners of compensation for their services, can hardly have been intended to be taken seriously. There are more than a few doctors and ministers who are willing to pursue their own occupations and let Christian Science stand or fall according to its merits. The others, it is to be hoped, are actuated by a higher motive than the getting of an ignoble advantage.

As the situation exists where the law is impartial, a large percentage of Christian Science healing is not paid for, even when a practitioner has been instrumental in the result. Many sufferers are, for the time being, unable to pay. Others, from material habits of thought, do not accept the view expressed by Paul to the Christians at Rome, which I quote in modern English: "If the Gentiles have shared their spiritual blessings, they owe them a debt of aid in material blessings."
