Several months ago we had a wonderful proof of the power...

Several months ago we had a wonderful proof of the power of Christian Science in the case of a contagious disease, so called. At that time I happened to be the only Christian Scientist in our family, although both my stepmother and her mother are now earnest students. I have two little brothers, one of them six years old, and the other a baby of two. The older boy was taken suddenly ill, and the symptoms were so alarming that a doctor was called. A day or two later, during which time he grew worse, the case was diagnosed as a serious condition of the throat. We were immediately placed in quarantine and a trained nurse arrived. It was afternoon when she came, and by this time great fear had taken possession of the household. From the first, the two children had been together, and the usual remedy was given to the sick child at once, and it seemed for a while that the same treatment might be forced upon the others.

At this point I became frightened, and telephoned for help in Christian Science. My stepmother, too, in her anxiety for both the children, asked for help from the same source. It was six o'clock that same evening, however, before we were able to talk with the practitioner over the telephone, but her words were so strong and full of love that the sense of fear was lifted. The sick child, as well as the other one, was helped, and at four o'clock the following morning a decided change took place in the little brother's condition. The fever went down, and from then on he improved rapidly. The doctor said that he would watch the baby, as well as the others, very closely, and that the minute any symptoms of the disease appeared he would give antitoxin.

We were in quarantine almost three weeks, and during that time no one else in the family came down with the disease; while, on the contrary, the trained nurse, after leaving the house, was sick for over a week with what at first was feared to be the same trouble. Afterward the doctor told us that he considered the boy's case remarkable, and he cited an instance similar to this where, for six weeks afterward, he had to use drastic measures. It was remarkable, too, he thought, that no one else contracted the disease.
