AMONG THE CHURCHES
CURRENT NOTES.
Lewiston, Maine,—At a meeting this evening [June 12] of the members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Auburn, final action was taken on the purchase of the Friends church edifice on College street in Lewiston. This purchase involves the transfer of the Christian Science society from Auburn to Lewiston. It also marks the closing of regular services by the Friends, for the present at least. Years ago, when the adherents of the Christian Science faith were but a handful, meetings were held in the old hall at the head of Lisbon street. Later, when the New Odd Fellows building was erected in Auburn, the society, which had grown rapidly, moved into that lodge-hall for its Sunday morning services and for the Wednesday evening testimonial meetings. Services are still being held there.
With constant gains in membership and attendance, the Christian Scientists have felt the need of an edifice of their own. The Friends church property is extremely desirable because of its fine location in the best residential part of the city and on the main loop of the "Figure Eight" electric line. The lot is on College street, near Sabatis. The seating capacity of the auditorium is about two hundred, while the chapel will seat about one hundred. It is understood that the new owners hope to expend considerable money in making thorough renovations before the building will be ready for use by this society, but they expect to make these changes before fall, so as to dedicate the church in the early autumn.
