TRUTH PRACTICALLY APPLIED

As one who has gained much happiness as well as success in business through the application of the Principle of Christian Science, I am glad of the privilege of relating how this has been brought about, more especially as my experience may be of assistance to those who are in business trouble. About eight years ago I first became interested in Christian Science. I had been suffering for over twenty years from an illness which according to the medical fraternity is considered incurable, and it was only when I found that they could not offer me any relief that I turned to Christian Science and was healed.

My business at that time was in a bad condition, for the returns had been falling off for some years, perhaps partly owing to apathy and inefficiency on my part, and partly to greatly increased competition. Finding that the earnings were not sufficient to meet my needs and those of a growing family, I endeavored to increase my income by speculation on the stock exchange, with the result that I not only did not add to my supply, but lost a very considerable portion of my capital, and finished by getting heavily into debt. Then, when I took up the study of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," it became evident that if what Mrs. Eddy said is correct, Christian Science, when properly applied, can heal not only sickness and disease, but will overcome lack and limitation of every description; and seeing that my financial condition was almost as bad as my physical, I decided to try Christian Science for both.

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave us the rule which, when understood and intelligently applied, will solve all our difficulties, namely: "Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." It was not, however, until I took up the study of Science and Health that I found a way of putting this teaching into practise, since until that time I had no conception of what constituted the kingdom of God. Mrs. Eddy says on page 518 of Science and Health, "Blessed is that man who seeth his brother's need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another's good." Now I found upon investigation that the needs and cares of our work-people were often far greater than mine, and it was in trying to make their lives a little happier and brighter that I myself found greater happiness and contentment than words can possibly convey.
