THE LECTURES

Judge Clifford P. Smith delivered two lectures on Christian Science under the auspices of Fifth Church. The introductory remarks of D. A. Clippinger, first reader, at the first lecture, were as follows: —

We are living in a practical age, an age in which mere theorizing counts for little, an age in which systems of government, business, education, teaching, are subjected to the keenest scrutiny, the most searching analysis, and their value is measured by their usefulness. In this age nothing counts but results. It is a hopeful sign of the times that mankind is beginning to apply the test of efficiency to religion, and dogma and platitude are losing their hold. The age is demanding a practical religion; it is beginning to grasp the meaning of Paul's saying, "Now is the day of salvation." For nearly half a century Christian Science has stood the test of efficiency, and has brought to multitudes of people health, happiness, and success.

At the second lecture Mrs. Rosalie G. Amory, in introducing the lecturer, said in part, —
