WITNESSES FOR TRUTH
We are told in the Bible that we are God's witnesses. This statement has long been a puzzle to the human race; it is a puzzle to the individual for a longer or shorter time, but it ceases to be such when viewed in the light of the teachings of Christian Science. Every manifestation of life, of good, of activity, of truth, of love, is a witness to the existence of the Principle of these qualities, and Christian Science shows that this Principle is God.
Man is God's witness when he testifies truthfully concerning the nature and activity of God. The word witness as used by the Old Testament writers has a much broader and higher significance than is commonly given it in its application to human affairs. In this higher, spiritual sense, man always is the witness of God. Being the expression or image of God, man must testify to the nature and activity of God. If for an instant one should cease giving this testimony, he would cease to be man. All there is to man, idea, is this disclosure he brings of the nature of God, Mind. This testimony is the best because it is direct. All that man knows of God he learns from God; it is not possible to gain any knowledge of God from any other source. God is Spirit, Life. The efforts of the human mind to secure knowledge of life from matter have been futile. They always will be futile, for matter knows and can know nothing of Spirit or spiritual things.
The testimony which man gives about God is true. It never has been and never can be other than true, for it is based upon the knowledge that comes from God, Truth, and must necessarily be true. In worthily living, man gives true testimony concerning Life; in his truthfulness, man gives true testimony concerning Truth; in true loving, man testifies truthfully about Love; in his unselfish and harmonious activities, man testifies truthfully of the eternal doer. In these ways is man the witness of God. His testimony is not "hearsay," for he speaks of his own knowledge derived from God, Mind; it is "direct" evidence.
