ACTIVITY
One of the definitions of activity found in Webster's dictionary borders very nearly upon the metaphysical, thus: "Change, development, or interplay not involving physical force; as, thought activity." The sense of efficiency which counts most in the realm of human endeavor, is thought activity, plus the results that such activity brings into manifestation. The student in any science who can think clearly, act promptly, and with intuitive skill perform a chosen work, is put down as master of his calling. He becomes a leader, and we give him positions of trust.
Thought must precede the working model. The world is looking for results, growing out of active thought training. The thinking world very soon outgrows a theoretical promise of deliverance tomorrow, next month, or next year. Activity that deserves the name must yield fruit now, today, our one golden day of accomplishment. Even the world of matter furnishes us with some interesting facts. We sit by our firesides and watch the sportive flames. Why is the firelight, so attractive to our gaze? Because a flame of fire is never still, its outlines are ever changing, constantly outpicturing new possibilities, and we lose ourselves in pleasant reveries which grow momentarily more fascinating. Moreover, what we see in the ruddy flame typifies the undying activity of divine Love, which never grows less. The eye loves an active mental image, and the heart admires an active hand that accomplishes its meed of good in the Father's vineyard.
Now, the truest test of harmonious action is the good it effects, the peace it brings. In Science and Health we read, "The highest and sweetest rest, even from a human standpoint, is in holy work" (p. 519). Spiritual activity nurtures and directs every worthy demonstration of truth. Apathetic indulgence never gave us a pearl of great price; but activity, our obedient recognition of Truth, heals, comforts, and builds anew all virtue and all godliness.
