Although I have been extremely slow in acknowledging...
Although I have been extremely slow in acknowledging the benefits I have received through Christian Science, the necessity for unloading a heart filled with gratitude for blessings already received has fully dawned upon me now. About six years ago, with the thought of criticism uppermost in my mind, I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," determined to find the weak spots in Mrs. Eddy's teachings, so that I might be able to disprove to relatives of mine who were already interested members of the Christian Science church, the utter fallacy of the supposed cures made by the followers of this (to me then) "fad" religion.
I had read probably less than fifty pages in the text-book before I was healed of conceit in a large degree, and many wonderful truths which I had never even thought of before were revealed to me. I then started in earnest to gain at once all there was in the subject. The letter came plentifully, but alas, the spiritual uplift very slowly; in fact, I sought for three long years to gain the requisite understanding necessary to comprehend the meaning of the allness of God and the nothingness of matter. I was rewarded almost miraculously during this seeking for Truth, for when I first opened Science and Health I was well-nigh a nervous wreck, very thin, weak, and run down from various excesses. I had been a constant sufferer from a chronic bowel difficulty since childhood, was troubled for years with piles, and had catarrh, one nostril having become so obstructed that it was impossible to breathe through it. I was compelled, therefore, to take drugs very frequently for the relief of some ailment; but every one of these ills was overcome and destroyed through the study of the Christian Science text-book, together with an honest search of the Bible for more of the truth at the same time.
I am now considered a strong, healthy man, though I have not touched drugs of any kind in over five years, and have never even had to call upon a Christian Science practitioner for physical help for myself up to the present time, although my wife and little girl have both had demonstrations of healing made for them by practitioners. Through the understanding I have gained in studying Mrs. Eddy's book, I have been enabled many times to heal the sick in my own family and to aid others outside the family who sought help. I am indeed grateful for the spiritual inspiration which has come to me, and my prayer to our heavenly Father is that I may so order my future life as to be found worthy of the name Christian Scientist.
