A GARDEN OF LOVE

Error tries to discourage many workers on the literature distribution committees by belittling the work, by saying it is nothing to hand a paper to some one; but a member of one such committee has been greatly helped, and taught a lesson in patience, by watching the development of a waste piece of ground into a fine garden. This ground is surrounded by houses, and the soil had become so hard and unyielding that to make a garden and grow beautiful flowers seemed impossible. It needed much attention, but the soil was turned over many times to get rid of the stone and brick, and a quantity of new earth was added to make the lot more kindly. The service, however, has been well repaid, and the garden is a great source of pleasure and beauty.

So, too, the ground on which our literature distributors are working is the whole mental realm, and the literature distributed is doing its work of turning and overturning, breaking up the hard crust of prejudice and antagonism, bringing to the surface and casting away opposition, malice, and innumerable wrong ways of thinking, and putting in their place the new soil of hope and understanding. This ground also, as in the garden above mentioned, needs much loving care before it is ready for the "seed of Truth," which "springs up and bears much fruit" (Science and Health, p. 271).

It is an inestimable privilege to take part in this work, even if it is only to distribute one Monitor weekly, or to pass along a Sentinel or Journal when occasion offers; they will do their work of purifying and uplifting some weary wanderer, hemmed in by material beliefs to the seeming exclusion of the sunlight of divine Love. We know that "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance;" such fruit is surpassingly beautiful, and to help in its development, be it in ever so small a way, will bring a great sense of gratitude and rejoicing.
