In a recent issue an evangelist holding services in your city is reported to have said that Christian Science is a heresy which keeps men from coming to Christ.

The gentleman evidently has no accurate knowledge of what Christian Science teaches, or he would not have made a statement so opposed to the truth. If heresy consists in following all the commands of the Master, including the healing of the sick as well as the saving of the sinner, then Christian Science is a heresy, and not otherwise. The great Teacher and healer, Jesus Christ, spent the greater part of his time during his ministry on earth in healing the sick of all manner of diseases. In fact, his ministry was one of healing in demonstration of the power of God. He preached only one sermon, while the Bible reports that he healed multitudes. He taught his disciples how to heal by prayer and he gave this sweeping command to all who should believe on him: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. ... And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

Christian Scientists believe that these commands should be followed literally, and they have demonstrated to their own satisfaction that prayer to God heals the sick the same now as when Jesus uttered these words just prior to his ascension.
