At a local church Sunday evening [March 10] the subject of the sermon was "Healing." The text was taken from the fourth chapter ofLuke, verse 40: "Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them."
This is a subject which nearly always appeals to a congregation. Throughout the history of the world people have been searching for health, happiness, and for ways of bettering their condition. If not themselves in need of healing, most persons have friends who have tried various remedies and who have failed to receive the relief sought. Most of us know of cases where years of search and trying various remedies have been followed by discouragement, hopelessness, and despair. Some of us have been told at such times that we must be resigned to our fate, and suffer because it is inevitable.
One point brought out in the sermon was that one of the duties of man to his brother when he is in need of healing, is to take him to the divine healer, the one perfect physician who never lost a case and never refused one, Christ Jesus; that he is our guide and example. The strange part about the sermon was that Christian Scientists should have been criticized for their efforts in trying to do this very thing. Without a doubt it is true that Jesus never lost a case. This is why Christian Scientists believe his method of healing to be the best and why they prefer it to any other. This is why they apply it in their own cases in so far as they understand it, and recommend it to others.
