It was in the fall of 1904 that I first attended a Christian Science...
It was in the fall of 1904 that I first attended a Christian Science meeting, going as a guide to my mother, who is a Scientist and who was then visiting me. I became interested in the teaching at once, as I had for many years been an earnest worker in an orthodox church, and often had pondered the lack of logic in its teachings; but in Christian Science I found a reasonable explanation of the Bible, and many a clouded question was soon illumined by the light of Truth as revealed in Science and Health. I was at that time, and had been for sixteen years, a sufferer from hemorrhoids. I had used almost every known remedy, besides having been treated by a physician, finally going to a well-known hospital, where I was told that nothing but an operation could cure me. I was trying to arrange for this when Christian Science found me, and I think it was at the third meeting I attended that I was healed of the hemorrhoids, during the reading from the desk of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I felt the ailment pass away, and have not been troubled with it since.
I had been a sufferer from biliousness accompanied by severe headaches ever since my boyhood days, but during the study of our text-book, and the application of its teachings as I understood them, this discord, too, disappeared. Then the smoking habit, of twenty years' standing, went. The desire absolutely vanished, although I had not thought of giving up the habit. I was working in the tobacco business at the time, and I had been accustomed to smoking a great deal; but, although I continued at this business for a year, yet never once did I have the slightest desire to smoke. I had also been subject to a bowel disorder every summer, and two years ago was taken with a severe attack while at work, but in fifteen minutes the treatment which my understanding of God and man enabled me to give, cured this disease, and it has never returned.
Two years ago last March I was taken with a severe attack of rheumatism and was unable to move. I failed to meet this disease through my own understanding, and sought help from a practitioner. In ten days I was cured and at my work, and the most beautiful part of all is, there has not been the slightest return of the disease. I have not used a single drop of medicine of any sort since I first took up Science. I have a wife and three children, and although my wife does not seem to have lost all her faith in drugs, still we have Christian Science treatment for all the disorders of our children, which are indeed rare, for I find Christian Science a preventive as well as a curative.
