Preachers and church officials are in a quandary to find the reasons for empty seats in churches and the general indifference toward religion manifested by the worldly world. With all their scholasticism, form, and sensational allurements, ministers and evangelists fail to draw the multitudes as did the unlettered humble carpenter and fisherment in the days of primitive Christianity. The Master had no lack of audience, although there was no oratory, high-sounding subject, or classic music. The inseparable teaching and healing of Jesus, his earnest simplicity, faith, and love, won the crowd, the common people, and they followed him, though they lacked food. In departing from the flesh, he gave commission to preach the gospel and heal the sick in the manner that he did. Ministers and other disciples observe the first part of the commission with a "vengeance," but ignore the second part, leaving that for the doctors. "The works that I do shall he do also; and greater," said the Master. When return is made to the simple teaching and healing of Jesus, there will not be room in church edifices for those of the new birth and others desiring to know that truth which makes men free from the bondage of sin, disease, and death.
