When I went to a Christian Science practitioner for...
When I went to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, I had reached the end of a darkened path in which I had walked for long weeks with great hardness and bitterness of thought. From days of wretchedness and sleepless nights, mind and body had reached the point where only drugs could quiet overwrought nerves or bring even an hour's respite from pain. I told the Scientist that I did not want to live, and when she asked me whether I would rather work out my problem here or somewhere else, I told her I would rather risk the somewhere else. She listened to all my miserable story, and when I had finished showed me with much loving patience and wisdom why I had reached the state in which I found myself, laid bare to me all the error which was robbing me of my birthright,—health, happiness, and peace. In that first treatment my body was healed, and I went home to sleep for the first time in weeks without the use of drugs. In the few days that followed, the gates of another world were opened to me,—and such a world of light and love! I forgave by knowing there was nothing to be forgiven, and all my hardness and bitterness slipped away as a shadow.
I go my way now with winged, not leaden feet ; my days are filled with gratitude for all that divine Love has given me, I sleep at night to the music of that song of David, "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me to dwell in safety."
