I feel that I was divinely led to investigate Christian Science
I feel that I was divinely led to investigate Christian Science. I had for quite a number of years been a churchmember, and for some time studied the Scriptures to prove that the denomination to which I adhered could produce more clear evidence of truth than could any other; but in time I realized that human doctrines were not sufficient for my needs. After reading and pondering the Master's words, "If ye abide in me, and my works abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you," I knew that I was not in the right relation to God, or my prayers for relief from the physical and mental difficulties from which I was suffering would be answered.
Three years ago I was in very poor health. I had for some time been subject to attacks of severe pain, accompanied by nausea. These attacks became more frequent, till at length I suffered a complete breakdown. I was ex tremely nervous, so much so that at times I feared insanity. In June of that year I took a trip to Portland, Oregon, and while there I met an old friend who had been an invalid for many years, but who was now enjoying the best of health. On inquiring as to the means by which she had recovered, I was told it was Christian Science. I had been reading Science and Health in a desultory manner, but had little understanding. I called, soon after my conversation with this friend, on a Christian Science practitioner, but she told me I must come to her office every day for a time, and I felt that I could not remain longer in the city, as business called me home.
In two weeks after returning home, I became bedfast, and not knowing what else to do and to satisfy my family, I called a doctor. He diagnosed my illness as due to ovarian trouble, and said I had an abnormal growth. He also said I could get no permanent relief except from a surgical operation, and advised me to go at once to a hospital. At this time I was suffering greatly, and was terribly bloated—could not even turn myself in bed. I told the doctor I would go back to Portland for help, and I wrote at once to my friend, telling her I was coming back for Christian Science treatment. I asked her to find me a place to stay with some Scientist, and to engage a practitioner for me. She did so, and as soon as possible my son took me there.
