When I first heard of Christian Science and listened to...
When I first heard of Christian Science and listened to an explanation of what it taught and what it accomplished, I decided to read its text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and judge for myself. I did so, and attended the Sunday and Wednesday services also. That was nine years ago, and what I heard of this teaching in the beginning has been verified all along the way. I have experienced its healing power over a mind "ill at ease" as well as a sick body, and over accidents. I have also proved its power to liberate one from the bondage of so-called worldly pleasures, of the habits of excessive drinking and smoking, the use of profanity, and the witnessing of debasing exhibitions of cruelty. These evils were destroyed during the study of the text-book, and especially of the "scientific statement of being" which it contains (p. 468).
The truth also helped me to overcome in a short time two carbuncles, one directly in the armpit, the other close to it. There was not the slightest pain, the arm could be used in any position, the cores fell out on the fourth day, the cavities closed up at once, and inside of a week there was no sign where they had been. To me this was wonderful compared to my previous expericnces with them; as, when having recourse to drugs and sometimes the surgeon, they were always extremely painful and it was six or seven weeks usually before they disappeared. I must also tell of the freedom from pain after a badly scalded foot, and also after a serious accident to my thumb, when the nail was forced off and the bone injured. In both these cases the pain was overcome in a few minutes. My memory also has greatly improved. At one time two or three lines would be all that I could possibly remember, but as I slowly realized the truth that no faculty of man can be lost, I am now able to learn and retain many chapters of Scripture.
These are only part of the many benefits I have received, but far above all the physical healing is the light that Christian Science has thrown upon the Scriptures; it has indeed made the Bible a new book to me, a book to be loved and made a daily reference and guide. Christian Science has made known to me my creator as a loving Father and everpresent Saviour; it has cast away from me many forms of fear and given me confidence, tranquillity, and peace when I needed them. I look back on the day that Christian Science was offered to me with joy and gratitude to the one who mentioned it to me. Nothing in my life has compared with this gift, and I am endeavoring to put into practice, however feebly, a little of that love which was shown to me by so many friends in London, members of the churches there, who from the first and until I left England, gave me so much patient, loving help and guidance.
