Compared to the peace and joy and spiritual upliftment...
Compared to the peace and joy and spiritual upliftment which the study of Christian Science brings into one's life, the physical healing seems almost unimportant ; but, as Mrs. Eddy says, "divine Truth must be known by its effects on the body as well as upon the mind, before the Science of being can be demonstrated" (Science and Health, p. 350).
I should like to relate one out of many personal experiences of Christian Science healing. About two years ago, when stepping down from a high chair, I fell heavily to the ground with my left hand doubled underneath me. I knew at once that to mortal sense I had hurt my hand seriously, as I had been a hospital nurse for ten years and had considerable surgical experience. I soon found that my wrist was very seriously injured. I tried to declare the truth of being, but the pain and shock seemed so real for the moment that I felt I must have help. I telphoned to a practitioner, who began treatment at once, and came to me without delay. When she saw what the injury was, she very kindly said that if I wished to have a surgeon to set the wrist, she would stay and help me; "but," she added, "divine Love is the best surgeon," and her words were so convincing that I felt no material aid was necessary. The pain gradually subsided, although it was very hard and the arm as far as the elbow was badly swollen and discolored. After a couple of hours I was able to move my fingers, and shortly after that to raise my hand. On the third day afterward I did my own hair, and after one week's treatment I continued to use my hand constantly, although it was some little time before it resumed its normal appearance.
Needless to say, I was extremely thankful to be spared the pain and prolonged discomfort of surgical treatment, but it was for the (to me) absolutely convincing and beautiful proof of God's ever-loving presence and power that I was most grateful. This knowledge which we gain through the study and understanding of Christian Science does indeed fill our hearts and minds with the "peace of God which passeth all understanding."
