In March, 1904, I first heard of Christian Science, and at this time I was very much dissatisfied with religion. I wanted to get away from it, although I still believed that there was a God. Some time after this I purchased property in the city, and to my surprise found that Christian Science services were held in the residence next door to my home, which fact only served to make me more antagonistic to what I thought Christian Science to be. I was invited to attend these services, but refused to do so. My wife, however, commenced to read the literature, and was quite interested in it; but I could not see any virtue in it, partly because, no doubt, I loved the world's ways too well, and was afraid that Christian Science would not agree with them.
In April our boy had an attack of measles. He had been in bed two days when a lady living next door learned of it, and asked my wife if she had any objection to her treating the boy, to which my wife replied that she had not. This was in the morning, and when I came home at noon the boy was up and out of doors playing. Well, my surprise can be imagined, but I was very much alarmed when a week later my wife came down with the same disease. She, however, did not feel any need of going to bed, but did all of her work, both in and out of doors, and very quickly recovered from the illness. This experience also left her with good eyesight, whereas she had weak eyes before. I then asked the lady who did this healing work, and I was told that it was God. I asked for further information, and was told to study the Bible. I did not have one in the house, but got one at once, and began to read at the first chapter of Genesis. From that time I never let a day go by without reading more or less of it. I had been very much in the habit of swearing, which took me all that summer to overcome. I also smoked heavily, but this was overcome very quickly, as well as the liquor habit. These were all done away with by studying the Bible, and getting its spiritual understanding, as this lady would explain it to me.
Here I would like to speak of another healing. In July, 1888, when living in Ohio, my father took me to Cincinnati, to the best eye doctor he could find, but we were told that nothing could be done for my eyes, except to wear glasses, which I at first refused to do. I was then told that I would become blind in a short time if I did not; so I consented. About the year 1900, I consulted another specialist, who had a wide reputation, one of the best that could be got. He told me that my left eye was beyond help; I could not read with it, even with the strongest glass he could give me.
