My attention was first directed to Christian Science while searching after that great desideratum,—health. I had enjoyed a fairly robust constitution with good health, and as I advanced in years it completely disturbed my equanimity when my medical adviser told me that in all probability I should ultimately lose completely the use of one hand and arm, and never again be able to discharge any duties of an arduous nature. Primarily, the attack which was quite sudden, was apparently that of a stroke, and after diagnosis and medical attention my left hand and arm were in a semisensationless state, so that everything I took hold of fell from my grasp. At night the pain was so intense that it compelled me to pace my room, and rendered sleep an impossibility.
It was in this condition, and after I had completely exhausted all medical skill and remedies, that I first turned to Christian Science, through the instrumentality of a very kind Scientist friend, who graciously presented me with a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. My efforts in this direction were, however, soon crowned with success, for a short time after, and while reading the text-book, the full use of my hand and arm was restored to me, and from that day (now three years ago) to this I have never had the slightest return in any shape or from of the old malady, and have never been prevented from discharging any duties that were required of me.
Words fail and are inadequate to express more particularly the spiritual regeneration that has taken place in my life. I had always been an ardent devotee of the orthodox church, but it remained for Christian Science to revitalize my whole being with wellsprings of divine Love and to help me to realize the inexhaustible source of supply for all our needs, which is meted out to each and every one of God's children; also to realize that we are all God's children, brothers and sisters in Christ. Christian Science has revealed to my consciousness the ever-present Father, Life, Truth, and Love, where before I had but a mythical image with a very vague sense of God. Daily I strive to realize how harmonious all things of God's creation are, when studied from a spiritual basis,—the rock, Christ Jesus, being the foundation stone. No reference of mine to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, could adequately convey my heart's overflowing gratitude. As in my case, so in countless thousands, it is solely due to her unswerving and Christlike attitude, in the face of a seething mass of worldliness, sin, and materialism, that this regeneration and healing has taken place.
