It was in 1904 that my daughter first complained of pains in her hand. We sought the advice of a doctor, who said that in his wide experience he had never seen this trouble manifested in so young a person, she being then eleven years old. The doctor gave it as his opinion that she was suffering from the worst kind of rheumatism, that which leads to deformity; and he said that if the disease was not checked, it would very soon become chronic. Although she continued under the doctor's treatment, the malady manifested itself more and more in different parts of the body, which proved to us that his ability to cure was far below either his sympathy or his interest. After a while other doctors were tried, and as the impotency of each one became apparent, he was either given up or, as in one instance, the doctor gave the case up after an attendance of fifteen months.

All through this period my daughter went from bad to worse. The retirement of the last doctor seemed to leave us with a helpless daughter, who was suffering great pain, while as a family we realized that our inheritance was one of hopelessness. Strange as it may seem, just at this period of deepest darkness, a sister who resided at St. Anne's recommended Christian Science. Having had four years of disappointment and defeat in one direction, it was with very great reluctance that I came to Rochdale. When, however, I moved in this direction, it was first to ascertain what kind of people Christian Scientists were, and by what method the healing was wrought. Attracted by the kindness and nearness of the Christian Scientists I found on my first visit, assisted greatly by my daughter's practitioner, and guided by "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, we have witnessed the dawn of Truth in our day. In our experience materia medica proved its impotency and finally collapsed; while Christian Science proclaimed God's omnipotence and Truth's absolute triumph. From a bed of pain my daughter has been raised to a life of happiness and usefulness. Twelve months ago our home might have been called a house of bondage, but today it is one of liberty, and we are rejoicing that through divine Truth the lame has been made to leap as the hart, and the tongue of the dumb doth sing.

Instead of being confined to her bed, our daughter is now going to work and earning a livelihood. When asked as to the reason of this tremendous change, we declare it to have come by Truth's appearing—what Truth itself hath wrought. In giving this testimony we would express our gratitude to God for having upraised such an apostle of Truth and freedom as Mrs. Eddy, who by her discovery of Christian Science has been able to lead my daughter, and thousands besides her, to the fountain of infinite Life.
