BEGINNINGS

Begin the year with God,
O thou who standest on its threshold fair!
And then, whate'er may come, thou needst not care;
No burden will be thine thou canst not bear,
Nor any task assigned thou may'st not dare;
So, ere a single step thou yet hast trod,
Begin the year with God!

With God begin the day!
It is the day He made; in gladness speed
To meet its every task, nor shalt thou heed
Fear's subtle whisper that would bid thee plead
Unfitness for thy place. His hand shall lead;
So, that thou may'st His guidance know for aye,
With God begin the day!

With God begin the hour!
It is but lent thee; fill its slender span
With cheering thoughts and loving deeds to man;
On error's faintest murmur place swift ban.
This hourly do: whoso thy work may scan
Shall know, by its full meed of love and power,
With God began the hour!
