"GOD IS LOVE."

The beginner in Christian Science is always deeply impressed by the new sense which he has gained of the apostle's declaration that "God is love;" and even though he does not at once grasp its full import, there is to the one bowed down by trouble great comfort and assurance in these few and simple words. In two instances the writer experienced in a wonderful way the truth expressed by this statement.

A misunderstanding had sprung up between two brothers, which had gradually developed into a condition of enmity, and this continued for several years. The brothers were in different cities, but the time came for the return of one to his home town. The family had been greatly troubled by this discord, and were disturbed about the meeting of the brothers. I, however, knew that "God is love," and that "love thinketh no evil," and man, as God's image and likeness, has no sense of hate or resentment, no thought of evil in him whatsoever. It was then proved that Love is truly "the liberator" (Science and Health, p. 225), for without even an unpleasant word the brothers met, the aggrieved one going to the other's home unasked, and acting as though no discord had ever existed; which was the truth in reality, or it never could have been manifested. The natural way in which it all came about, together with the absence of anxiety on the part of the family, was very beautiful, and after it was all over no one seemed to be even surprised. It was but a repetition of the experience of those who went to roll away the stone at the Master's sepulcher, and found that their fears had been groundless—the "very great" stone having already been removed before their arrival.

The second instance was one of the healing of disease through the realization of the truth of this same statement, "God is love." One evening a friend sent a message, saying that she was suffering from an attack of heart trouble, to which she had been subject for many years. She had just taken up the study of Christian Science, and now asked for help. At first a troubled feeling came over me at the thought of her being alone in that apparently helpless condition. Then it flashed through my mind that God was there, and that God is Love, infinitely more tender, more helpful, more powerful than any human parent, brother, or sister. What the human hand and human love could not do, God, infinite Love, could and would do for His child. As our dear Leader says (Science and Health, p. 6), " 'God is Love.' More than this we cannot ask, higher we cannot look, farther we cannot go." My fear at once disappeared, and the next day I received word that this friend was well and about her work.
