I think it a duty which I owe to others to tell what Christian Science has done for me. I was a non-believer in this teaching, and only accepted it after all other remedies had failed and I was doomed to go. A physician diagnosed my case and pronounced my ailments organic and incurable; so I thought that if all the learned doctors with all the known remedies at hand could do nothing for me, Christian Science certainly could not cure me. I thought that Christian Science might do for people who imagined they were sick, but not for one in my condition.
My first attack of the organic trouble was in April, 1904, while living near Guthrie, Oklahoma. I was suddenly taken ill and my suffering was intense. A physician was called, and after a hypodermic injection to relieve the pain, he examined me and said there was enlargement of the liver, and that I had a growth in the stomach which could not be cured by medicine or removed by surgical operation. If I ate solid food, it caused me intense pain. My second serious attack was in August, 1906, at Otterbein, Ind. A prominent physician of Lafayette was called in consultation, and after an examination he told me that if I had any unsettled business, I had better attend to it at once. Then he called my folks to another room and told them that I had a malignant disease of the stomach and that I could not get well. Before leaving he told me that I might get up out of this attack; but if I did, I would have others just like it, and every one would be worse until the end. I lay there for nearly three months, and hardly expected to live from one day to another.
In March, 1907, we sold out our business and came to Kansas City. I had been here only two days when I was taken suddenly ill, as the Indiana physician had said I would be. My suffering was terrible and a physician was called. After giving me the second hypodermic injection, he made an examination, but said that the only thing he could do was to give me hypodermic injections from day to day to relieve the pain. A new complication set in, and he called a surgeon in consultation. He said it was a rupture and would require a surgical operation; that I would have to go to the hospital that afternoon and prepare to have an operation performed the next day. He said they could relieve me, but could not cure me. I was willing to do almost anything to get relief, but I asked the surgeon if there was any immediate danger in an operation of that kind. He said that they could not perform an operation of that kind without more or less danger. I did not go to the hospital or have an operation performed; if I had, I do not think I should be here to write this testimony, as I was very weak from my long illness and severe suffering.
