I should like others to know the joy and peace which...
I should like others to know the joy and peace which Christian Science has brought to my home. For two years it seemed as though God had forsaken us. Five doctors had failed to cure my husband of a nervous breakdown, and he was obliged to retire from business. Just when the last doctor had suggested hypnotism, a Christian Scientist friend happened to call, and she told that nothing was too difficult for God to heal, and went at once, missing her midday meal, to get a practitioner. I bought a copy of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and opened it out of curiosity, but the Preface was so beautiful that I read it right through, and on to a few pages of the chapter on Prayer, when suddenly everything was illumined, and I knew I had found the truth for which I had been seeking all my life. My heart overflowed with gratitude, and I at once took off a ring which I had worn for rheumatism, threw away my eye-glasses, and all medicines, including hair tonics, and was healed instantaneously of a bad cough, which had greatly broken my rest for six years, a diseased lung, an internal weakness, etc. Four months later, three hours' reading of the "little book" put away a severe gastric attack. One Wednesday evening I went to the service at First Church of Christ, Scientist, London, without any voice, but was healed during the service and was able to sing the last hymn quite clearly.
I have read little or nothing but Christian Science literature since the day I had the text-book, and my greatest happiness is to read the Bible (which I have always loved, but never before understood) with it, as this truth makes it all so clear, and gives me understanding. For all the healing I am very grateful, but I know that the only way in which I can show my gratitude for the spiritual understanding is to follow in the way pointed out by our Leader,—to live the truth,—and this I am daily striving to do. My husband's health has been restored, and he is now doing his own work. My 'maid also has been healed of many ailments through the reading of the text-book. Ever since I can remember I have wished that I could have lived when Jesus was on earth, but now my thanksgiving is that I am living in this age when Mrs. Eddy has, by her unselfish and pure life, again declared and demonstrated for the good of mankind the great truths which Jesus taught. I am grateful, too, for having been privileged to help others.
