After taking up the study of Christian Science, I often...
After taking up the study of Christian Science, I often wondered if I could be faithful if great danger were to threaten one of my children, and a short time ago I was put to the test. My little son was taken with what seemed to be an ordinary sore throat, but as my work did not appear to relieve him, I called for a practitioner. Very soon it seemed wise to have a physician's diagnosis, so a doctor was called. After an examination he looked grave, and finally he told me that he thought my boy had a fever and throat affection together ; that he considered him a very sick child, and before leaving he intimated that he had seen children not so ill as he dead within two hours ; leaving me to draw my own conclusions.
Right then and there I demonstrated for myself that I was not afraid to leave my boy in God's care, knowing that the omnipresent power of God was stronger than any law of materia medica. The physician was asked to notify the board of health, in order that they might take whatever steps they deemed necessary in the case. This, however, was late in the afternoon, and they were unable to take the matter up until half past ten the next morning. That night the battle with disease and the medical law was fought and won, and it was demonstrated that "the power of Christian Science and divine Love is omnipotent. It is indeed adequate to unclasp the hold and to destroy disease, sin, and death" (Science and Health, p. 412). The next morning, when the physician called to take a culture of the throat, no evidence was to be found, and we were not quarantined, though during the remainder of the time we kept a strict self-imposed quarantine for the benefit of outsiders. In eight days the same physician was again called, and pronounced it safe for my little boy to be released from his room. All the disagreeable after effects usually supposed to follow this fever were met and overcome, and in two weeks he was back at school.
I am grateful for this experience, inasmuch as it demonstrated to me that we can with perfect assurance trust our all to God, knowing that our loving heavenly Father never fails us when we "ask in faith, nothing wavering." I am grateful for the loving and faithful work of our dear Leader, through whose discovery of Christian Science this experience was made possible.
