"RELIGION THE BASIS"

In a newspaper report of an address before the students of Leland Stanford University, by Dr. W. F. Cheney, a professor in Cooper Medical College, we find the following:—

"And good there must certainly be in Mrs. Eddy's teachings," said Professor Cheney, "since countless thousands are yearly taking up the Scientist belief, with no compulsion or revival meetings on the part of the Eddy forces. Christian Science makes religion the basis of its cures. Christ himself was known as the 'great Physician.' as well as the 'great Teacher.'"

These words, coming as they do from a physician of prominence, indicate a growing spirit of liberality on the part of the profession of which he is a member, and they should be heeded by those who seem determined to crush out by legislation, if possible, all healing work which does not bear the hall-mark of their own particular school. At this late day there can be but few physicians who have not been at some time brought into personal touch with the beneficial effects of Christian Science practice, and it would be wise for all who have had such an experience to investigate (and if this investigation is faithfully carried on, they can but endorse) rather than ignore or belittle, as some have done, the remarkable work which is being accomplished under their very eyes. Christ Jesus was indeed the "great Physician," as well as the "great Teacher," and one of his teachings respecting those who wilfully shut out the truth is that they did so lest they should be converted and be healed by his master touch.
