The Utah Fuel Company has pleaded guilty in the United States court to the fraudulent acquisition of 1,440 acres of coal land, paid a fine of $8,000, also $192,000 for the coal extracted, and relinquished the land.
In
speaking of a difficult problem, one requiring considerable mental labor, we often hear it said by earnest, well-meaning Christians, and also by those who are striving to be Christian Scientists, that they will leave it all with God, and take no further responsibility in the matter.
Religion
, according to its accepted Latin derivation, is that which binds man back to God, the ligament or tie that holds man in union or at-one-ment with God.
The medical bills against which the Christian Scientists and others who believe in the treatment of diseases without the use of drugs are protesting, have grave fault in that they would prevent any treatment of disease except that authorized by regular schools of medicine and practised by regular physicians.
The refusal or reluctance of some of our churches to grant letters of dismissal to their members who wish to join the Christian Science church, because the latter is not recognized as a religious body by orthodox churches, and also because of the prosecution in the courts of some of the members, who refuse to employ doctors for their families during sickness, has awakened more or less discussion not altogether favorable to the churches.
"Christian philosophy" can be only the teaching of Jesus, and surely "traditional Christianity," if it follows that philosophy, should be able to heal the sick and do the works of the Master as did the early Christians prior to the advent of scholastic theology.
It is not strange that one whose belief as to what constitutes science is based upon material sense, should differ in his conclusions from Christian Scientists, who reason from spiritual premises; but when one undertakes to deal with the arguments of a Christian Scientist, we have a right to insist that they be weighed against our premises and not against his.

When Christian Science found me I was a rather vacillating and uncertain individual, undisciplined and ever leaving any work that seemed harder than I wanted to do.

Many times, when I have been depressed and discouraged, sometimes over trifles, or perhaps over heavier difficulties, the testimonies in the Sentinel and Journal have been the means of help and encouragement to me.
In submitting this testimony of the benefits derived by myself from Christian Science, I do so with a desire to convey to others my heartfelt gratitude for the divine guidance that assisted me to my present state of health and happiness.
