About eleven years ago a copy of The Christian Science Journal...
About eleven years ago a copy of The Christian Science Journal found its way into our home. The testimonies of healing at once appealed to my mother, probably because we were all so much in need of it. At that time I was a child of nine. Every winter was a dread to us, as I would be ill from fall until spring, often being absent from school from four to six weeks at a time. I suffered from lung and stomach trouble, severe colds, etc. This particular winter, through reading the Journal and "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mrs. Eddy, my mother learned enough of Christian Science to know that man need not bow down before sickness, as a slave before his master. I had been sick in bed since fall and had a physician in constant attendance. There was no noticeable improvement, however, but on the contrary the sickness continued longer than usual.
There were then only a few in our city who were studying Christian Science, and as we had not heard about practitioners, we knew of no help to be had except by reading the literature. One day my mother, on the strength of her slight understanding of Christian Science, decided to dismiss the physician, who had been coming every day. She then told me I might get up, as she had read in the Journal that we did not need to be sick. I was only a child, and of course was delighted with the prospect of once more being up and active. I arose at once, and as I was very weak, at first it seemed hard to walk, but it was not more than four or five days before I returned to school perfectly well. Christian Science has not only healed me from physical ills, but it has also prevented sickness. For eleven years I have not taken any medicine, and during that time, if any illness has begun to make its appearance, it has soon been destroyed by applying the Principle of Christian Science as taught in our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.
As one goes on with the study of Christian Science the physical healing seems like a small thing when compared with the right understanding which this truth gives of all things. By following the rule of right thinking as taught in Christian Science I have seen harmony enthroned where discord had reigned; I have seen lack give way to abundance; and I have seen hate overcome and destroyed by Love. It is difficult to find words to express gratitude for that which is all-in-all to one, and my desire is to live continually my gratitude in daily deeds.
