I have long felt that I should tell of the many blessings...
I have long felt that I should tell of the many blessings which have been mine since I heard of Christian Science, and thus help some other travelers on their road from sense to Soul. I was fifty-nine years old when Christian Science was brought to my notice, through the healing of my adopted daughter. I applied for treatment, and was relieved of a stomach disorder of ten years' standing, although the healing of this ailment was completed only after nearly two years of study. I have been thankful that my healing was slow, for it was because of this that I studied, — searched and found the truth.
I saw and acknowledged the beauty and power of the truth, for which I had long been looking, and I wanted to know more of it. To mortal sense I was a very poor scholar, not even knowing all the letters of the alphabet, but my practitioner said, "God is your teacher, and as there is no age in Spirit you can learn to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. The members of my family thought this impossible, greatly fearing that because of my many years of sickness, being melancholy and weak, I would become insane; but the truth that I had heard — "God is your teacher" — was stronger than their fears.
This was my beginning, and I humbly asked to be led, guided, helped. and guarded, I was sure that it was possible for me to know, for the truth came from God. Of myself I knew nothing. All my spare moments, gained by sacrificing worldly enjoyments, gossip, and sleep, I spent in learning my letters and in putting them into words. How closely I watched when the Bible and the hymns were read, and each day I gained a little : and even if it was but as much as a grain of mustard-seed, I knew that just that much of error or darkness had to depart. When my family thought I was asleep, I was studying, watching, and praying for the light to shine.
