I first heard of Christian Science in the winter of 1902, when a niece who had been healed visited me. I then thought very little of it, and smiled at the idea of anything of the kind healing the sick. My niece, however, left with me a copy of The Christian Science Journal, but I did not read it until I was driven by extreme suffering to look into Christian Science. From childhood I had suffered from a weak stomach, and for twenty-five years I had been constantly under the care of a doctor, besides taking a great deal of medicine. Four different doctors treated me at various times, but only temporary relief resulted. In the mean time the disease had become chronic, and normal action was a thing unknown. Nearly all the organs of the body seemed to be involved, and at times I suffered such intense pain that only opiates would afford relief. In December. 1906, I consulted a specialist, who gave me treatment and prescribed a very careful diet. After four weeks of faithful adherence to the doctor's orders I found myself no better, but instead growing weaker.
Just here my young daughter, who had heard something of Christian Science, persuaded me much against my wishes to try it. I was relieved of all the stomach difficulty at one absent treatment. My appetite returned at once, and I have since been able to eat anything I wished without distress. I continued the treatment for about two weeks, and ever since have been strong and well. I procured a copy of "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and through the understanding which has come to me from reading my Bible in connection With this wonderful book, I have been able to overcome many forms of illness, a sprained ankle being entirely relieved in three hours.
For all these blessings I am very thankful to God, and I feel that great gratitude is due Mrs. Eddy from all mankind for her discovery, whereby we learn that God is indeed "a very present help in trouble."
