As a regular practising physician and surgeon, I naturally...

As a regular practising physician and surgeon, I naturally took some interest in what was being said regarding the healing power of Christian Science; I had heard a great deal about the cures that had been made, but really knew nothing about Christian Science; therefore I concluded about six years ago to attend some of the meetings which were then being held in a hall in this city. Like many others, I was at the beginning somewhat skeptical, and in fact inclined to ridicule the idea; however, when I saw the character of the people who attended the meetings, their pleasant and satisfied expression, I began to think that there must be something in Christian Science, otherwise so many apparently well-to-do and intelligent people would not attend. I bought a copy of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and read it over carefully, but found that it required considerable study in order to get the proper understanding of the subject. The more I read the book, the more the truth therein disclosed began to unfold itself to me, and finally I saw plainly why the people I met at the meetings looked so well pleased; they had simply found the truth, and showed it in their demeanor. I became so interested in the meetings that I could not very well keep away from them, and now I do not want to keep away. Christian Science has completely captured me, and bids fair to hold me for the balace of my sojourn here.

The first practical experience or physical benefit I derived from Christian Science was about two and a half years ago, when I had a very badly swollen face, resulting from an ulcerating tooth. My jaw was very sore and the teeth ached terribly. It was a case which, according to the dentist's method, needed lancing, and I was advised to have it attended to at once. Besides that, I was very much tempted to take something for the intense pain it caused me. I, however, concluded to try Christian Science, and proceeded to the office of a practitioner and took treatment, with the result that the swelling went down, the pain lessened and finally stopped altogether, and I have not had any such trouble since. Before this happened, I was obliged to use lukewarm water when washing my teeth in the morning, otherwise I would have the toothache, but since then I have been aboe to use cold water daily for that purpose without any trouble whatever. My second experience took place about six months after the first. I had a clearly defined case of acute appendicitis; all the diagnostic symptoms were present, and pointed to the necessity of an immediate operation. Instead of resorting to an operation, however, I went to a Christian Science practitioner and had four or five treatments. Gradually the pains stopped, all symptoms disappeared, and I was completely cured without the use of the surgeon's knife; nor have I had any return of the trouble since.

I certainly have a great deal to be thankful for in what Christian Science has done for me, not only physically but also for the spiritual uplifting accorded me through these wonderful channels, and I now take pleasure in recommending those who come to me for medical treatment to a Christian Science practitioner for relief, whenever I think the person will take kindly to the proposition. I may be injuring myself financially by so doing, but trust that all will come out right in the end.
