If there is one who doubts that Christian Science does...
If there is one who doubts that Christian Science does the works which its adherents claim for it, I would say to this one that my personal experience gives ample proof of the fact that Christian Science does heal the sick and reform the sinning. For a number of years I suffered from many of the ills to which flesh is heir, was in the hospital at different times, and felt the effects of the surgeon's knife. During a period of about seven years I believe I either took internally or had applied externally practically every remedy known in the realm of materia medica, but all to no avail. Then, as if to knock the last prop from under me, a prominent specialist said to me, "I am sorry to inform you, but there is no help for you, so far as the practice of medicine in this country is concerned." From that hour I spent a good deal of my time thinking about the kind of a funeral I should have and where I should be buried.
I cannot conceive of any one being more opposed to Christian Science or more prejudiced against his concept of it than I was at that time; but here let me say that no man is prejudiced against Christian Science. He is prejudiced, if at all, against his own mistaken sense of its teachings. He either knows nothing whatever about Christian Science, or his concept of it is wholly erroneous. Finally, after being thoroughly scourged through the sufferings I experienced, and seeing no other avenue of escape open to me, I put pride and prejudice aside and turned to Christian Science for help, with the result that I was completely and permanently healed, and also received a moral and spiritual uplifting which made a man of me. This truth is leading famished, fainting, prodigal humanity away from the swine and the husks of materialism, up to the presence and knowledge of the Father, where the fetters of sin and disease are broken, where fear and its many fruits are destroyed, and the seeker gains man's lawful heritage—dominion.—James A. Hemingway, Chicago, Ill.
