It is often thought by those who do not understand the Science of spiritual healing, that healing the sick by any but material means cannot be done, and never has been done except by Jesus and his disciples, and because of that mistaken idea it is hard for them to believe that the sick can be healed to-day through Christian Science treatment. Jesus, the Christ, healed through his knowledge of spiritual law, and he said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life," and that all who believed on him or understood his teachings should and could do as he did, and "greater things than these." Christian Science, or Christlike knowledge, is based simply upon the teachings of the great Nazarene. We know that spiritual law has always existed, and those who lived before the time of Jesus, who were spiritually awake, healed through its power. There are cases of such healing throughout the Old Testament, and, in fact, we find a strong rebuke given in the case of Asa's failure to depend on the prayer of faith. He trusted not to the Lord, but to the physicians, with the result that "Asa slept with his fathers."

We are familiar with the healing throughout the New Testament and with the command of the great Teacher and Wayshower to go into all the world "and preach the gospel to every creature:" and he declared the signs that would follow those who believed in or understood his method: "They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." And that promise was fulfilled in the lives of all those who did understand up to the third century. In the history of the early Christians, or Ante-Nicene Fathers, as they were sometimes called, there are many instances of healing through spiritual power—and in some cases even the dead were raised. Why should we believe these things to be impossible to-day simply because they are not in accordance with material law, and therefore impossible to it? Has material law proved itself to be infallible, limitless, and all-powerful, that we should be afraid to leave it for God's law?

Christian Science coincides entirely with what we learn in the Scriptures of spiritual law and its effects. Mrs. Eddy has simply revived the methods of healing the sick which were practised by the early Christian Church.
