Four years ago I was suffering from rheumatic trouble...
Four years ago I was suffering from rheumatic trouble and a general breaking down of health which had been going on for years. I was a quartz miner, and as mining is hard work I had to give it up. As I did not know how to do anything else for a living, I became very much depressed. In talking to a neighbor one day, I expressed the wish that I were dead, and she said, "Why do you not try Christian Science?" As a last resort I got a practitioner's address and began taking treatment. It seems to me now that I was practically healed at the first treatment, though I had six in all, but for different symptoms. A few days after I had been healed, a plasterer in the vicinity wanted a man to mix mortar and carry the hod, and he was sent to me. At first I was afraid, as I had never done any of that kind of work; then I thought that this would prove Christian Science, so I went to work. I mixed mortar all day and carried it in the hod. When quitting time came my employer asked how much I had packed that day. I said I supposed it must be five or six tons. He said, "Yes;" and predicted that I would have a dreadfully sore shoulder in the morning. Next morning I got up, took breakfast, and went to work. I did not think of my shoulder till eleven o'clock, when I had a little rest, and then I could scarcely believe it, but there I was, and I did not have any pain anywhere. I had been an infidel and a scoffer, but I did more thinking that afternoon than I had ever done before. I have used no medicine since, though up to that time I was always using some kind of remedy. I am trying to be as good a Christian Scientist as I can. My sight has been renewed, and a habit of profanity overcome. Many other blessings have been given me, so I am very thankful to God; also to Mrs. Eddy for Christian Science.
