In giving Christian Science to a sin and disease-burdened...
The Blade
In giving Christian Science to a sin and disease-burdened world, Mrs. Eddy does not claim to have created a new religion, but on the contrary has removed the age-accumulated dust of ignorance and misapprehension regarding the religion of Jesus, proving to mankind that his religion in its completeness is just as vital and practical as it was in Palestine of old. Christian Science is the practice and proof of the teachings of the Master, and if Christianity is divine and infallible, Christian Science must be likewise, for it does not depart one iota from his precepts; and if, as our critic states, Christian Science will disintegrate, it will also be necessary for Christianity to do likewise, for they are identical; Christian Science not only makes this claim, but proves it beyond the shadow of a doubt.
According to Jesus there is only one way to determine if one understands his teaching—"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils." From these sayings of Jesus it is evident that true belief or understanding would (not might) be followed by signs of healing. If true Christian belief is accompanied by healing ability, what of a belief that does not confer the ability?
At first the opponents of Christian Science discredited the cures, but now that the evidence is so great on every hand, they admit the accomplishments, but say they are caused by suggestion, etc. It is the old cry of the rabble repeated. "He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils." One who makes the statement that cures of Christian Science are akin to the effects of suggestion betrays immediately the fact that he does not know the fundamentals of Christian Science. Not only is Christian Science different from suggestion, but it is directly opposed to it, recognizing it as an agent of the carnal mind opposed to spirituality and righteousness.
