Four years ago, while in Chicago, I received what was...

Four years ago, while in Chicago, I received what was called a sunstroke, which aggravated troubles that I had been afflicted with for years. I had never been healthy as a child, was almost constantly under a physician's care, and as I grew older other ailments made their appearance, including catarrhal, liver, and female trouble, etc. Following the illness first mentioned, alarming epileptic trouble came on, so that I had to give up my trade. Then began a battle for health, and for four years I tried faithfully all that the physicians prescribed, even going through a severe and dangerous operation, which only left me worse. I tried other material means, till I found myself weighing only eighty-five pounds, and a physician told me there was no hope for me, that I would eventually become bedridden. I failed fast, being finally in bed half of the time and suffering untold agony. Often I had not one hour's sleep for nights at a time, and the epileptic attacks became more frequent.

For quite a while a dear friend had been asking me to try Christian Science, but not understanding what it was, I did not think it was for me. At last I became so ill that I lay unconscious, except for a few moments at a time, a day and a night. The thought then came to me repeatedly to try Christian Science, and I promised myself that if I ever became able to go to a practitioner (one having recently come to our town), I would do so. I soon became able to read the literature which friends had sent me, and which I had heretofore ignored, laying it a away unread. At the same time I quit taking medicine, and soon I was able to be up and about the house. Then what seemed a new difficulty presented itself,—a severe bowel trouble,—but I did not forget my resolution. I telephoned my friend and asked her if she would make the arrangements and go with me to see the Christian Science practitioner the next afternoon, which she gladly consented to do. I went, and the first treatment stopped the alarming bowel trouble instantly. I found I could eat a hearty supper, and suffered no ill consequences. That night I had the first good night's sleep I had had all winter. Gradually the mist cleared away,—I found I could do hosework, and I enjoyed working in the garden, after having been confined to the house for so long. I had two weeks' treatment, and during this time I worked hard, besides walking two miles to the closing day at a school, where I played all the games with the children with perfect ease and great enjoyment. I did not have treatment for my eyes at this time, as I thought I could put up with the glasses which I had worn since the sunstroke, if I could only be healed of the other troubles, but later my eyes began to annoy me. I had been studying "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and knew that I did not need to suffer with my eyes, so I went to the practitioner, had a treatment, went home, laid my glasses away, and have felt no need of them since. I took a position in millinery in the fall, and never felt the need of glasses.

I have been made a new person, and I feel that I cannot fully express my gratitude for the physical healing and spiritual uplifting which I have received through Christian Science. My thankfulness to God cannot be expressed by words,—it must be in deeds! I hope my experience may lead others to seek this healing truth. I may add that I do not regret the suffering I have been through, since it was the means of leading me to this blessed peace that passeth all understanding.
