About the year 1900 I began to experience periods...
About the year 1900 I began to experience periods of mental depression, which would disappear with a day or two of recreation. In January, 1902, a complete breakdown took place, attributed by my physician to overworked brain and nerves, my work for a number of years having been tedious and very trying. Securing leave of absence, I went to the seashore, but grew rapidly worse. I tried various physicians and treatments, including a foreign drug treatment, four months at a suggestive treatment sanitarium, osteopathy, a water cure, physical appliances, dieting under a specialist, physical culture, etc.,—giving them each and all a good trial, but to no avail. After two years of terrible suffering from sleeplessness, together with the depression, fear, and the many dreaded illusions that accompany this malady, and after drugs had lost their power, even when the dose was trebled in order to put me to sleep, I turned to Christian Science and was healed.
I receive help at once, and after six weeks treatment the light of truth began to dawn on my consciousness, but it was six months later before I was entirely free. I find that studying and trying to live up to the teachings of Christian Science bring a peace and joy that "passeth understanding." When I think of the Discoverer and Founder of this grand truth,—Mrs. Eddy.—how she stood alone for years, presenting Christian Science to the world, it strengthens and encourages me to stand firm and to try and emulate her glorious example. It is with the deepest sense of gratitude that I pen these lines, for surely I was delivered from a present inferno. I trust they may be read by some poor sufferer and that my experience may show him what Christian Science can do for him.
