For over fifteen years I was an invalid....
For over fifteen years I was an invalid. I had been on the operating table, and had tried different doctors, but they all told me the same story, that I would never be a well woman. I had often heard of Christian Science, as I have always lived in Boston, Mass., but I did not think it was what I wanted. I came out here to California, hoping the climate would help me. I tried five more physicians, and they also told me, as the others had done, that I never would be well. I expected to be an invalid the rest of my life, as I had been taught that God had sent the trouble to me and that He knew how I suffered. After becoming discouraged with all medicine, I turned to Christian Science to try what it would do for me, as I knew it had helped others. I was healed in less than a week, and that was all I wanted of it—only to be healed physically.
About two years after this I was again taken very sick, just over night, and I again called for Christian Science; but this time it did not help me so quickly. I knew, however, that medicine would not help me, so I continued with Christian Science although one ailment would be destroyed only for another to come up. My daughter, not feeling satisfied with the treatment I was having, went to see our former physician, and he told her that I could not last three weeks, that nothing could save me, not even an operation. She was then willing to watch the work of Christian Science. As I wanted only the physical healing, it was months before I would give in; but at last I came to see that never would be healed until I was willing to work for myself spiritually, and then I began to be helped. I had every ill, seemingly, that one could have,—kidney and heart trouble, then dropsical, trouble, in the last stage. I could hardly move, but to-day I can say I am a well woman—can do any kind of work or anything that any one else can do. I am more than thankful to God, and to Mrs. Eddy for seeing this wonderful truth that does make and keep us free.—Wilhelmina H. Nichols, Pasadena, Cal.
