Two years ago, after a severe operation for abdominal...
Two years ago, after a severe operation for abdominal trouble, and subsequent complications from which I was told only about one person in a hundred recovers, I found myself no better. Moreover, I felt there was no hope that I ever would be any better, for the doctor had said there was nothing more that he could do for me, his remedies, like those of other physicians who had prescribed for me, having ceased to be of any avail. Nothing, seemingly, but a life of suffering and dependence upon others, remained for me. In this condition, so devoid of hope, happiness, or anything that would tend to make a longer continuance of life desirable or indeed endurable, through the advice of a beloved sister I asked for help from a Christian Science practitioner. For a long time I had been in the habit of frequently repeating this verse from the Psalms, "Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass;" and both before the operation and as soon as I had regained consciousness I said it, as also these words from Isaiah: "For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee." I now realize that my help did come from God, and that He did "bring it to pass," for it is through Christian Science that not only myself, but my husband and sister have come, in some degree, to a knowledge and understanding of this wonderful truth of man's being, as taught by Jesus the Christ and made plain to this age and generation through its revelation to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy,—the one above all others earnest, faithful, and loving enough to perceive the truth of Jesus' teaching as a demonstrable Science.
To her unceasing gratitude is flowing in on every side, not only for our inspiring text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," but also for her other writings and the many wise provisions she has made to increase our knowledge and understanding of Life, Truth, and Love. All honor and praise to God, the giver of all good, for His crowning gift to this twentieth century, Christian Science.—Mrs. H. Sibyl Lukens, Pasadena, Cal.
