When I sought Christian Science it was not to gain...
When I sought Christian Science it was not to gain spiritual understanding of God and man, but wholly for the physical help which I had heard one could derive through its teachings. The physical benefits to me and mine have been many, but they are small indeed compared to the spiritual awakening I have received while earnestly reaching out for the physical. In the fall of 1905 I was strenuously seeking light in Christian Science. I was not willing to wait, but was ever busy with the deeper questions, and trying to solve all in a day. Returning home one day from a neighboring city, one of our Leader's students was on the train, and I asked him how he could say or explain (as I was sure he would) that there was no reality in the awful pain which I knew I then had. Instantly he expressed an emphatic denial of the evil that was causing my suffering. I was startled, but was quite positive that I at that very moment was suffering severely. Then the Scientist lovingly turned my gaze "from the false evidence of the senses to the harmonious facts of Soul" (Science and Health. p. 420), and the spiritual sense of Life, God, was explained to me. The truth was so simply elucidated that I saw the fallacy of my human contention, and the healing was instantaneous. In now over three years there has been no return of that old physical enemy.
At that time I was physically and mentally on the verge of collapse. I dared not go out without protecting (?) myself with a so-called cure, and as in the case of Job, "the thing which I greatly feared" came upon me. I have received many physical benefits through the understanding of Christian Science. I have laid aside glasses, after having worn them for years. Meanwhile I have found that willingness to learn and to serve blesses and enriches. Not only can I now see without glasses, but the spiritual healing is enabling me to do the disagreeable things, sometimes necessary, without complaining. The past year I had the great privilege of receiving class instruction from one of our Leader's students, and since then the spiritual unfolding of the Bible and of Science and Health has been a revelation to me. The Bible had long been put aside, but now it is in daily use, as is our text-book; and I pray to see Truth so clearly as to reflect the Christ-spirit. and through living and healing to prove myself to be a Christian Scientist. I hope also to prove by good works my gratitude to God, and to our beloved Leader.
