After a severe attack of illness in 1889, while attending...
After a severe attack of illness in 1889, while attending boarding-school, an organic throat disease with which I had always been troubled, seemed aggravated, and became so serious that my mother was sent for. The attending physicians decided, as throat specialists had said before, that an operation was necessary. I was told that I could never use my voice to sing again. My mother was becoming interested in Christian Science (she had been healed of chronic ailments through reading Science and Health), and advised my having Christian Science treatment, which I decided to do, though had I idea it would heal me. I visited a practitioner three times a week for about three weeks, and was perfectly healed. My vocal studies were resumed, and I continued to sing and teach for many years, never missing an engagement. Deeply impressed by this healing of my throat, as well as of other ailments as they came up, all being promptly overcome when I sought the help of a Scientist, in a few years a great longing to know more of this healing Principle, how to help myself, was rewarded by the privilege of class instruction.
Words can never express what the understanding of Christian Science has brought into my life, in so far as I have apprehended and put into practice these glorious truths of right thinking and living. There is an abiding consciousness of quietness, peace, and an assurance of God's care that enables us to meet each experience as it comes, whether it be small or great. Science and Health has indeed been the "Key to the Scriptures," unfolding the spiritual truths in the dear old Bible stories and making them clear and practical realities for daily demonstration in this century. Our children were born under Christian Science treatment, and in each case the birth was natural, with very little discomfort, and I was about the house in a few days and out to church in a week. I have always found Truth the quickest and best remedy for all ills. Coughs, colds, and accidents have been overcome with Truth alone, and quickly as a rule. When our little babe passed away suddenly, this promise in the 23d Psalm was proved true: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." We have learned that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble;" that death has lost its sting, and there is no victory in the grave.
We are grateful to God, and to our brave and fearless Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who can be moved neither by persecution nor praise, and who asks us to follow her "only so far as she follows Christ" (1902 Message to The Mother Church, p. 7).—Harriet I. England, Chicago, Ill.
