Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle

After reading in a recent issue of the Chronicle of the attack on Christian Science by a doctor of divinity, I desire to state a few facts and ask a few questions in their defense. I am not a Christian Scientist, my membership being in the Presbyterian church, and what I know of Christian Science I have learned through hearing it talked by friends. I wish it understood that this letter is not written in a revengeful spirit, but merely to state the facts as I see them after hearing both sides of the question.

In the first place the reverend gentleman stamps the "whole system as the work of the enemy of Christ, and as Satan's preparation of the Antichrist." Now, if there is any one thing that Christian Science is not, it is Antichrist. I think, in fact I know, that Christian Scientists carry out more fully Christ's teachings than any other sect or denomination that is in existence up to the present time. In support of this I refer to Matthew, 10:1–42, and Luke, 9:1–6. In these chapters it will be found that Christ not only commanded his disciples to teach, but to heal all manner of sickness and disease, and to go forth with neither gold nor silver nor brass in their purse, neither with two coats, nor shoes, nor yet staves, for the workman is wothy of his meat. ... Then, too, the ministers of other denominations pay no attention to Christ's explicit command to heal the sick and cast out devils. As to the charge of being Antichrist, that is too ridiculous even to consider after reading the chapters above referred to, and hearing Christian Scientists state their belief. They believe that God is all-powerful, even more powerful than the Presbyterians consider Him; and they still believe what Christ told his disciples on this earth in regard to healing, as it is through Christ that they claim to be cured. ...

As to "the marvel that men and women of intellect and culture allow themselves to be ensnared by Christian Science," I really think the reason there are not countless thousands enrolled in their membership, is because of the lack of intellect and culture among a large majority of us. As to Mrs. Eddy's control of the Christian Science Church—what of that mountain out of a mole-hill? Do not all churches, secret orders, corporations, etc., have some one to direct the affairs of each?
