RECOMPENSE

Gladness to leave the false landmarks and joy to see them disappear,—this disposition helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony.—Science and Health, p. 324.

Let the dead past its haunting vigil keep
O'er earthly hopes long buried in the dust;
Yesterday's ghostly shapes but make us weep
For moth and canker-worm and clinging rust.
The siren song of other years is sung in vain,
And blackened shadows of regret disturb us not,
For God's eternal Now unfolds our gain,
And seeming losses of the past are soon forgot.
